Professional Mentors of Africa (ProMentors-Africa) is a registered non-profit organization that is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The major goal of the organization is to provide mentorship programs to young people who are either in or out of school with the objective of unlocking their potential and empowering them to seize new opportunities that are available to them. ProMentors-Africa also provides team-building solutions to corporate entities that are aspiring to create synergy and to enhance their overall output. Another objective of the organization is to equip caregivers/parents with skills in parenting in the 21st century.
The rationale behind the organization’s formation and programs is hinged on the observed changes in family relationships, work demands on parents, and changes in communities due to modernity thus leaving many young people without the adult support that was available just a few decades ago. There is an increasing drift towards the diminishing availability of parents who are the natural mentors to their children. Adolescents and older youths have to contend with massive challenges that naturally characterize their age but which have been compounded by the explosion of information in a fast unfolding world due to the high levels of advancement in technology. This has left many of them confused with significant numbers resorting to alcohol, drugs, sex and crime to fill the void created by lost hope.
With this hindsight, the solution has been to develop a mentorship programme which strongly focuses on the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of the human mind. At ProMentors-Africa, we believe that enhancing these human aspects contributes greatly towards the success of young people, be it in school, work and generally in life. This is because it helps them develop confidence and they are provided with the resources and support they need to maximize their potential thus facilitating them to achieve their aspirations
Over the last 20 years, ProMentors-Africa has worked with various bodies that deal with young people to provide mentorship across Kenya. These bodies include: the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA); the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA); the Children’s Government at the national level; schools & colleges from all over the country; corporate entities; religious organizations; and charitable institutions that work with children. We have trained more than 5,000 young people to date, a majority of whom have become not only trainers but have also successfully launched themselves into various careers in the world of work.
The success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), launched in Kenya in 2018, will be enhanced when we lay the right foundation in terms of focusing the minds of the learners to the core values we are proud of as a country and redirecting their energies to the attainment of their goals. It is critical that we now place more emphasis on the child. Our education system has for a long time focused on bombarding learners with knowledge while giving little regard to their readiness to learn. The methods that have been used have not always enticed the learners and at times have actually killed their morale to learn.
